The first akhada established was the Akhada Mahanirvani . Akhadas represent Sanatana Dharma in their entirety by including all Hindu sects (Shaiva, Vaishnava, Brahma, Shakta), Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists . While the heritage of Mahanirvani Akhada is ten thousand years old, the group was formally named in 748 A .D . after a very auspicious happening. In 748 A.D., a group of seven sadhus of Atal Akhada performed tapas (spiritual penance) at Gangasagar.
They were graced with the darshan (Divine vision) of Sri Kapila Mahamuni. With his blessings, they revived the Naga tradition with an official name – Mahanirvani Akhada – near Neel Dhara in Haridwar . Even today, the chief Deity (Upaasyadev) of the Mahanirvani Akhada is the saint incarnation, Sri Kapila Mahamuni.

Coronation as the Pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, South India
On 27th April 2012, His Divine Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda was coronated as the 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhanam, the pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, the world’s most ancient living Hindu religious organization. Accepting the responsibility as the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, His Holiness Divine Paramahamsa Nithyananda pledged to bring great fame to Madurai Aadheenam and the four temples belonging to it.
The legendary Madurai Aadheenam has existed since time immemorial. However, it was revived around 1500 years ago by the young enlightened incarnation Tirujnana Sambandar, one of the four visionary saints of South Indian Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy. The Aadheenam is established in Madurai, one of the oldest cities of India with a history dating all the way back to Tamil Sangam period in the 3rd century B.C. The presiding deities of Madurai are Shiva and Devi in their incarnations as Sundareshwara and Meenakshi, enshrined in the world-famous Madurai Meenakshi-Sundareshwara temple.
The pontiff of the Madurai Aadheenam is known by the title ‘Guru Maha Sannidhanam’ and inherits great responsibility in carrying forward the traditions of Tirujnana Sambandar’s sacred work. There is no tenure for this position and it is a lifetime honor.

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba coronates Paramahamsa Sri Nithyananda as ‘the Avatar’
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is revered and worshipped as an Avatar, the Divinity Incarnate by lakhs of people worldwide.
Avatars are divine beings who descend (‘avatarati’ in Sanskrit) on planet earth for specific divine purposes to raise humanity to their ultimate divine possibilities. It takes an Avatar to indeed recognize an Avatar, who exist in the oneness experience of superconsciousness.
It was on the historical day of 12th June 2004, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba personally sent and gifted three divine items to His Holiness Paramahamsa Sri Nithyananda, formally coronating him as The Avatar (incarnation) as per Sanatana Hindu Dharma.
The divine items offered onto Paramahamsa Sri Nithyananda Swamiji were Swarna Padukas, two sacred sandals made of gold and Kirita, the divine crown made of gold – which formally symbolize and officiate Swamiji as the Avatar, direct physical manifestation of divine superconsciousness who has incarnated in the human plane of existence.
The President of the Shri Sathya Sai Trust, along with a group of devotees of Bhagavan Sathya Sai Babaji visited the Bengaluru Aadheenam, Nithyananda Peetham on 12th June 2014 and reverentially performed homa, the ceremonial sacred fire ritual and Paduka Puja, and made these divine offerings of Swarna Padukas and Kirita.
There were two padukas offered to Swamiji – one that will be kept in the puja for people to offer their prayer and respects and the other for Swamiji to personally use.
In Sanatana Hindu Dharma, the formal offerings made by a Spiritual Master to another, uphold and grow the spiritual traditions from time immemorial. The coronation ceremony of an Avatar by another Avatar is very rare and holds not just the traditional significance of honoring the Divinity embodied in the Avatar, but also holds the cosmic significance of declaring onto the world the spiritual legacy and unbroken lineage of Avatars.
In this current age, it is a rare occurrence of Bhagavan Satya Sai Baba coronating and gifting divine items to The Avatar Paramahamsa Sri Nithyananda, signifying the traditional honoring of Swamiji for his superconscious state and his divine responsibility to spiritually lead the world and raise the humanity to their Divinity.
In the Tretya Yuga, we find Bhagavan Parashurama (the Avatar of Shri Vishnu) recognizing the Divinity in Shri Ram Prabhu (new Avatar of Shri Vishnu) and gifting him the celestial Bow of Vishnu, which can only be beared and held by an Avatar of Vishnu alone.
